Korankei, which has become famous as one of the best spots in Japan to view autumn leaves, is said to have begun about 380 years ago in the 11th year of the Kanei era, when the priest San'ei of Kojakuji Temple on Mt. Iimori planted maple trees one by one with the wish to "make beautiful nature even more beautiful."

From the end of the Taisho era to the early Showa era, volunteers from the surrounding area began replanting maple saplings, and in 1930 the area was given the name "Korankei," derived from the "fragrance of Kosekiji Temple" and the mountain air, or "storm air," emanating from the mountains.
There are over 4,000 maple trees, with their overlapping colors of red, orange, and yellow, which stand out against the clear waters of the Tomoe River, creating a truly magnificent sight.
