Aki no Miyajima

Itsukushima Shrine is one of the Three Most Scenic Spots of Japan and a designated World Heritage Site. The entire island is considered a sacred place, and since logging is prohibited, a lush virgin forest has been preserved.
It has been revered as an island of gods since ancient times, and has a long history, where many people have revered it. In particular, the worship of Miyajima by Taira no Kiyomori and the Heike clan is famous, and they even built Itsukushima Shrine. Miyajima also has many flowers and plants that reflect the seasons, so you can enjoy the changing of the flowers with each season.

See the beautiful appearance after the first renovation in 70 years

The current great torii gate was built in 1875 (Meiji 8). It is said to be the 8th torii gate if the first one was built by Taira no Kiyomori (1168), and the 9th if the torii gate built when the shrine was rebuilt after it was destroyed during the Kamakura period is included. It is a nationally designated important cultural property, and is the tallest and largest wooden torii gate in Japan (※). It stands in the sea 108 ken (approximately 196.4m) away from the main shrine building Itsukushima Shrine, and at high tide you can see its magnificent form floating on the sea, and at low tide you can walk right up to the base of the great torii gate and experience its size up close.
