Himeji Castle, representative of Japanese castle architecture from the early 17th century, was designated a National Treasure in 1951 and registered as a World Heritage Site in 1993. It is characterized by a beautiful linked castle tower, with a five-tiered, six-storey main tower and three smaller towers connected by connecting turrets, and civil engineering structures such as turrets, gates, earthen walls, stone walls and moats have also been well preserved. Completed by Ikeda Terumasa in 1609, the castle, also affectionately known as "White Egret Castle," underwent preservation and repair work on the main tower and had its grand opening on Mar. 27, 2015.

Himeji Castle, also known as the White Heron Castle, is a national treasure and a World Heritage Site and has many legends. One of these is the Okiku Well. It is said that Okiku, who appears in the story "Banshu Sarayashiki," was thrown into the well after being killed for losing one of her family's ten heirloom plates, and that her voice can be heard counting the number of plates every night. Parts of Himeji Castle are off-limits until 2015, when repairs to the main tower are being carried out, but the Okiku Well is located in a square called Kamiyama Satomaru and can be visited.

Tourist attractions around Himeji Castle

[Kokoen Garden]

This is a Japanese garden covering approximately 3.5 hectares that was built to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the city's founding.
It is made up of nine large and small gardens that make use of the layout of the house and the paths, as well as a wooded area and plaza along the approach.
The garden is connected by ponds and streams, and its biggest feature is that it uses Himeji Castle as a backdrop. The garden, which has the rich virgin forest of the Nishinomaru area of Himeji Castle as its backdrop, creates an elegant landscape where history and nature are in harmony. It is also used as a location for shooting period dramas.
