Highlights of Zao!
All images are Image only.
Miyagi Zao is full of sights, including the emerald green Okama kettle, the Echo Line where you can enjoy seasonal scenery, and hot springs.
In winter, you can also enjoy the frost-covered trees.
Hot springs near Zao
Zao Onsen, Yamagata Prefecture
The hot springs in Zao, Yamagata, have the characteristic that the water turns milky white when it comes into contact with air and oxidizes. This is effective for cuts and burns, as well as relieving fatigue and promoting health.
Miyagi Prefecture, Togatta Onsen
The hot springs of Miyagi Zao are said to be effective for treating leg and back ailments, as the severed tail of a giant eel from Fudo Falls, which was defeated in a battle with a giant crab from Sankai Falls, washed up here.
Zao Echo Line
The Zao Echo Line is a mountain road that crosses the Zao mountain range from east to west, connecting Miyagi Prefecture and Yamagata Prefecture.
You can enjoy the snow walls from the opening in late Apr. until around mid May.. We recommend taking a drive to see the fresh greenery of summer. In late Sep., the trees turn red and yellow, creating a truly spectacular sight. Be sure to check out this famous autumn foliage spot that represents Tohoku.
*The park is closed for the winter from early Nov. to late Apr. of the following year.
Rime-covered trees (winter only)
The autumn foliage season is also recommended, but in winter, Zao is known for its frost-covered trees, also known as the "Ice Monsters." The glittering silver frost-covered trees seen from the ropeway and the colorful nighttime illuminations that make them stand out in the darkness create an atmosphere that makes you feel as if you have wandered into a fantastical world.
