In 1945, just before the end of World War II, Toyama City was bombed, and the city was flooded with workers hoping to meet the demand for construction work during the reconstruction effort. It is said that the dish originated from a thick, soy sauce ramen soup made to provide salt for the sweaty manual laborers. Its black appearance has a mysterious charm that arouses curiosity.
