UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage

A historical picture scroll spanning 380 years

The Yatsushiro Myoken Festival is an annual autumn festival held at Myoken Shrine in Yatsushiro City, Kumamoto Prefecture, and is registered as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage.
The climax of the Myoken Festival is the procession of the gods that takes place on Nov. 23rd. Around 40 performances, including lion dances, kasaboko floats, turtle snakes, and decorated horses, are carried in a procession from Shioya Hachimangu Shrine to Yatsushiro Shrine, centering on the portable shrine and sacred horse. The sight of the sacred horse galloping through the riverbed of Tozaki, splashing water, is particularly impressive.
