エイサー！エイサー！
波打つ太鼓のリズムに乗って

一般的に旧暦の7月15日、先祖をお送りする旧盆(沖縄ではウークイという)にあたる夜、青年男女が集落内を踊り巡ります。
各家の無病息災・家内安全・繁盛を祈り、祖先の霊を供養するもので、基本的には本土の盆踊りと同様の意味となります。

下界に降りてきた先祖の霊が帰りたがらないので、太鼓を叩いて脅かし、再びあの世へと送り出したのが、念仏踊りとしてのエイサーの成り立ちです。
