The largest "Dai" character expresses a wish for peace

Nara 's Daimonji Okuribi is a fire festival to commemorate the war dead and pray for world peace.
The memorial service held in Tobihino is extremely rare, as it involves both Shinto and Buddhist ceremonies being held consecutively to honor the souls of the 29,243 heroic war dead from Nara Prefecture.

The character "Dai" which is the centre of the event is said to represent the universe, and there are 108 hearths which make up the character, the same as the number of earthly desires of human beings.
The size of the "Dai" is one of the largest in Japan, with the first stroke measuring 109m, the second stroke 164m, and the third stroke 128m. It is lit at 8pm and can be seen from all over the city.
