Shodoshima food and souvenir information

The area is one of the leading producers of somen noodles, soy sauce, tsukudani, sesame oil, and olives.

Tsukudani and soy sauce

Shodoshima's soy sauce, which was born under favorable conditions such as a warm climate and high-quality salt, began production in the Bunroku era and is now counted as one of the four major soy sauce-producing areas. Tsukudani, which uses this high-quality soy sauce, currently boasts the top share of the national market.

Olive products

Olives bloom with small white flowers in early summer, and in early autumn the branches are filled with green fruit. A variety of olive products, such as olives preserved in salt or olive oil, are available for purchase on Azukishima.

Somen noodles are made by combining wheat flour, salt, water, and oil. Somen made using the local climate, high-quality salt, and specialty sesame oil is exquisite. There are also somen noodles with olives available, which make for a great souvenir.

Sesame oil

Shodoshima is the birthplace of "Kadoya Oil Company," famous for its sesame oil, and the island has a warm, stable climate throughout the year, making it an ideal environment for producing sesame oil. Please enjoy the high-quality sesame oil made on Shodoshima.

A word from Shodoshima Tour Planning Staff, Kamata and Wakasa

Azukishima is known as the setting of Tsuboi Sakae's novel "Twenty-Four Eyes". At the "Twenty-Four Eyes Movie Village," you will encounter the nostalgic scenery of the early Showa period.
A little further into the mountains, you will find the Senmaida rice terraces and a glimpse of Japan's original landscape. However, the view from Olive Park, with its Greek-style windmill, reveals the peaceful Seto Inland Sea. The contrast with the blue sky and white windmills is spectacular, reminiscent of the Mediterranean.
There are so many things to see Azukishima, please come and visit.
