Club Tourism and the trajectory of Sanriku Railway restoration
On Mar. 11, 2011, the Great East Japan Earthquake occurred off the coast of Sanriku, causing unprecedented damage to the Sanriku coastal region. 2021 marks exactly 10 years since the earthquake. Club Tourism has worked with Sanriku Railway to work together to restore tourism in the region. We would like to introduce the path of recovery that Club Tourism and Sanriku Railway have taken. Club Tourism will continue to fully support Sanriku Railway.

We supported the reconstruction by Mar. 2014, and donated 1,000 yen per person from the tour fee. As a result of our efforts over about two years, about 15,000 customers participated, and the total amount of donations amounted to 14,869,000 yen.

The completed Shimakoshi Station building on Sanriku Railway Kita-Rias Line.
The dome-shaped roof, which retains the appearance of the old station building, is its symbol. Following the resumption of full service on the Rias Line on Apr. 6, 2014, it is expected that the reconstruction of the station building will bring back even more vitality to the area.
The unveiling ceremony was held on Friday, Aug. 1, 2014, in summer-like weather.
The monument with your names engraved on it will be approximately 2 metres tall.
(From left in photo) Attending the unveiling ceremony were Mayor Ishihara of Tanohata Village, Kajita, our company's then Director of Regional Exchange Department, and Sakashita, Director and Business General Manager of Sanriku Railway.
They shook hands firmly in front of the commemorative monument.

[Mar. 23, 2019] The Sanriku Railway Rias Line is now fully operational! The longest third sector company in Japan is born!
Since it was closed due to damage caused by the Great East Japan Earthquake, the JR Yamada Line between Kamaishi and Miyako has been undergoing reconstruction work. After reconstruction, the management was transferred to Sanriku Railway, and the section between Kuji Station and Mori Station was connected into one line, which began operating as the Sanriku Railway Rias Line. With a total length of approximately 163 km, it is now the longest third sector line in the country!
Club Tourism offers many trips to enjoy Sanriku Railway including trips on the transferred sections and chartered trains. Come and enjoy a train journey carrying the dreams of reconstruction, the spectacular coastline, and the fresh and diverse seafood of Sanriku, a place full of attractions.

[Oct. 2019] Typhoon Hagibis hits Sanriku Railway
On Mar. 23, 2019, Sanriku Railway transferred the Kamaishi-Miyako section from JR, connecting Morioka and Kuji into a single line as the Rias Line. However, the line sustained major damage from Typhoon Hagibis, which passed off the coast of Sanriku on Oct. 12.
The damage reached 77 locations, with train services suspended on 70% of the entire line. Large amounts of soil and sand filled the tracks, and embankments were washed away.
[Mar. 20, 2020] After overcoming the typhoon disaster, the Sanriku Railway Rias Line has resumed full operation!
We have received a great deal of support from everyone, and we have been gradually recovering. We will continue to work together as one in the Sanriku region, and do our best to ensure that everyone who comes to visit us has wonderful memories.
