Guided by the weeping cherry blossoms, experience the fascinating world of waka poetry

This garden was designed and opened by Yanagisawa Yoshiyasu, a chamberlain to the 5th Tokugawa Shogun, Tokugawa Tsunayoshi, at his secondary residence, in an attempt to express the world of waka poetry through the garden. In 1953, it was designated a Special Place of Scenic Beauty by the national government. Its most famous feature is the enormous weeping cherry tree that appears before your eyes the moment you pass through the inner garden gate at the center of the garden. Since 2001, the garden has been lit up to coincide with the blooming of the weeping cherry tree, in commemoration of the 300th anniversary of its construction.
