Miyako Islands

Miyakojima

The beautiful, crystal clear "Miyako Blue" sea that represents Miyako Island is said to be made up of the beautiful white geology called the Ryukyu Limestone Layer and the flat topography with no high mountains or large rivers, making it difficult for sediment to flow into the sea.

It was designated a national historic site, place of scenic beauty and natural monument in 2007. In May, trumpet lilies bloom all around the cape.

"Imgya" means "surrounded spring water" in the local language. It is a popular spot with Iwayama surrounding a quiet beach, a promenade and an observation space.

Irabu Island

Located northwest of Miyako Island, it is the second largest island in the Miyako Islands after Miyako Island.

Sarahama Fishing Port is a major fishing area for bonito, with a prefecture-wide share of the market of about 80%.
On the slope leading from Sarahama Fishing Port, colorful houses are packed together in a maze of narrow alleys, creating a scene reminiscent of a fishing town in a foreign country.

Shimoji Island

It is adjacent to Irabu Island and is connected to it by a small bridge.
There are also many popular spots such as Shimojishima Airport, which has beautiful blue seas.

If true north is 0 degrees, then aircraft land from a direction of 170 degrees, hence the name, with the "0" omitted.

Ikema Island

An island located 1.3 km north of Nishihenna Cape, at the northern tip of Miyako Island. Vegetable cultivation and bonito fishing are thriving here.
To the northwest of the island there is a huge coral reef called Yabiji.

Apart from the settlements, much of the island is considered sacred, and there are many areas where people are prohibited from entering.
You can get there from Miyakojima by regular ferry, but there are only 4 to 5 round trips per day.

Along the coast of Ogami Island, there are strange mushroom-shaped rocks called Notches.
It is said that the rocks that rolled off the surface as the island rose up were gradually eroded by waves over the years, resulting in their current bizarre appearance.

Tarama Island

Tara Majima is about 25 minutes by plane or 2 hours by ferry from Miyakojima.
The area is surrounded by a flat terrain of raised coral reefs stretching for approximately 15km, and is covered with vast sugarcane fields.
