Nishi Honganji, Nijo Castle, Shimogamo Shrine

The area stretches from Kyoto Station to Kitaoji, and Nijo, Nishi Honganji, and Shimogamo Shrine which are registered as World Heritage Sites.
Other attractions include Kyoto Imperial Palace and Kyoto Aquarium, which is one of the largest inland aquariums in Japan.

① Shimogamo Shrine [World Heritage Site]

An ancient shrine located in the ancient Tadasu-no-Mori forest. Registered as a World Heritage Site, even in the midst of a bustling city, this lush green area is a place of relaxation where time flows at a leisurely pace and where locals come to take a stroll.

②Kitano Tenmangu Shrine

Kitano Tenmangu Shrine, where many visitors come to pray for academic success, is also famous as a famous cherry blossom viewing spot. In front of the shrine is a long-established shop selling "Chogoro Mochi," a favorite of Toyotomi Hideyoshi.

Kiyomizudera, Maruyama Koen, and Ginkaku-ji Temple

Kamogawa The area is located at Higashigawa from Kiyomizu temple and Ginkakuji Temple is registered as a World Heritage Site and is a tourist area dotted with popular spots.

⑧Nanzenji Temple

There are also seven mysteries that remain in legend, such as the "nightingale-bari corridor," where you can hear a sound similar to that of a nightingale when you walk down the corridor.

⑬Maruyama Koen

Park that spreads out to the east of Yasaka. Sonochi spreads across gentle hills and features a walking path around a pond. It is also famous for its weeping cherry blossoms, which are some of the most beautiful Japan.

Kamigamo Shrine, Kifune Shrine, Ohara Sanzenin Temple, Iwakura Jissoin Temple

The area is located north of Kitaoji, and Kamigamo Shrine is registered as a World Heritage Site.
Other Kuramadera Temple, which is associated with Ushiwakamaru (Minamoto no Yoshitsune), Kifune Shrine, which is located in the back part of Kyoto Kibune, and Ohara, which are scattered in the mountains. Sanzenin Temple, Hosenin Temple, and Manjuin Temple, which is designated as a national beauty spot for its dry landscape garden, are especially recommended during the autumn foliage season.

⑮Kamigamo Shrine [World Heritage Site]

Kamigamo Shrine is located in the north of Kyoto City. Kamogawa river flows right next to the shrine, and mountains tower behind it, making it a place rich in nature that soothes visitors. It is one of Kyoto's old shrine and is also famous for the Aoi Festival.

⑯ Kifune Shrine

Old shrine with an approach that runs along Funagawa. It attracts worshippers as the god of water who also brings good luck in finding love. You can also enjoy the water fortune telling, where the fortune will appear when you float the Monji in the sacred Kanzui on the grounds.

⑰Sanzen-in Temple

Ohara, located in east of Kyoto, was once a hidden village inhabited by hermits who had renounced the world.
Sanzenin is one of Tendai Goka gates, and is a famous temple with beautiful scenery that changes with the seasons, attracting many visitors throughout the year.

㉙ Iwakura Jisso-in Temple

Jisso-in Temple has two gardens, one a landscape garden and the other a rock garden.
Both gardens have different sights to see in each season, but their floor maples are especially famous.

Arashiyama, Tenryu-ji Temple, Togetsukyo Bridge, Kinkaku-ji Temple, and Komyo-ji Temple

This area is located in the west of Kyoto, and Kinkaku-ji Temple, Ryoan-ji Temple, Saiho-ji Temple, Ninna-ji Temple, and Tenryu-ji Temple are registered as World Heritage Sites.

It is a treasure trove of prestigious architecture. In spring, the Omurozakura cherry blossoms, a designated scenic spot, bloom in full bloom, captivating visitors.

⑳ Tenryu-ji Temple [World Heritage Site]

The Sogenchi Garden, with its Arashiyama scenery as a backdrop, is as beautiful as a painting and was Japan's first designated historic site and special place of scenic beauty.
It attracts many people with its different scenery throughout the seasons.

21. Arashiyama

This area has long been known as a tourist destination. It is beautiful both in cherry blossom season and autumn foliage season. Take a stroll through Sagano where the Togetsukyo Bridge spanning the Katsura River and numerous ancient temples create a Kyoto-like atmosphere.

22. Sagano Romantic Train

You can enjoy the nature and beauty of the valley along Hozu River for about 25 minutes. You can enjoy different scenery in each season, such as cherry blossoms in spring, fresh greenery in summer, autumn leaves, barren fields in winter, and sometimes snowy scenery.

22. Kinkakuji Temple [World Heritage Site]

It is located in one of Kyoto's most popular tourist areas, with many of the city's most famous temples lined up against the natural scenery of Mount Kasayama. The Golden Shariden Hall and Kinkakuji Pavilion, which represent the Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss, are particularly famous.

㉚Komyoji Temple

When it comes to spots to see Momiji in Nagaokakyo city, Komyoji is the place to go. The vast grounds are dyed red by hundreds of maple trees, and Ishidatami of the approach to the temple is filled with them, creating a mesmerizing sight.

Toji Temple, Daigoji Temple, Byodoin Temple

Located south of Kyoto Station, this area includes Toji Temple, Daigoji Temple, Byodoin Temple, and Ujigami Shrine which are registered as World Heritage Sites. Other attractions include Tofukuji Temple, famous for its autumn leaves, and Fushimi Inari Shrine, the head shrine of all Inari shrines in Japan.

22. Toji Temple [World Heritage Site]

This ancient temple is associated with Kobo Daishi Daishi Kukai and boasts the tallest five-story pagoda in Japan. It is said to be a treasure trove of esoteric Buddhist art and has many temple treasures. In particular, the three-dimensional mandala in the lecture hall was created by Kukai and conveys his teachings to the present day.

22. Byodoin Temple [World Heritage Site]

Founded by Fujiwara no Yorimichi in the late Heian period. The national treasure, the Phoenix Hall, is famous as the design on the 10 yen coin. At the Fushokan Museum on the temple grounds, you can see many temple treasures, including the Unchu Kuyo Bosatsu statue.

22. Fushimi Inari Taisha Shrine

It is the head shrine of the approximately 30,000 Inari shrines across the country and is located at the foot of Mount Inari. Behind the main hall is a magnificent sight of the thousand torii gates donated by worshippers.

22. Daigoji Temple [World Heritage Site]

The temple grounds cover the entirety of Mount Daigo, and include a main hall and a five-story pagoda. It is a famous cherry blossom viewing spot, known as the place where Toyotomi Hideyoshi held his "Daigo Cherry Blossom Viewing" event.

22. Tofukuji Temple

In autumn, the surrounding mountains turn crimson red Tofukuji. The view from Tsutenkyo Bridge is spectacular, making this one of Kyoto most popular spots for viewing Momiji.

Other highlights

Although it is a little far from Kyoto Station, the area has a different atmosphere from Kyoto city, and Yamadera is registered as a World Heritage Site.
Also, to get there individually you would have to transfer between buses and trains, so it is a popular spot for viewing Momiji that can only be accessed through a group tour.

⑭ Enryakuji Temple on Mount Hiei [World Heritage Site]

Mount Hiei stretches from north to south across the border between Kyoto and Shiga prefectures. The entire huge mountain is the temple grounds, and the three areas of Todo, Saito, and Yokokawa are collectively called Hieizan Enryakuji. It is a major holy site for Japan Buddhism.

22. Takao area (Jingoji Temple, Saimyoji Temple, Yamadera [World Heritage Site])

Tsugao-Yamadera is also famous for its caricature of birds, animals and humans. It is one of the most famous places to see Momiji not only in Kyoto but in Japan as well.
