Kyoto 3 Great Festivals: Kyoto Gozan Okuribi
What is the Jidai Matsuri?
Date: Oct. 22nd every year (postponed to the next day if it rains)
The Jidai Festival is known as one of Kyoto three major festivals, along with the Aoi Festival and the Gion Festival, and began in 1895 as an event to celebrate the 1,100th anniversary of the transfer of the capital to Heian.
Led by the sounds of flutes and drums played by the Restoration Loyalist Corps, the procession travels back in time to the Enryaku period when Heian-kyo was built, making this a festival that represents autumn in Kyoto.
<Highlights of the Jidai Festival>
The highlight of the Jidai Matsuri is the procession of people dressed in the manners and customs of the era.
The history of Kyoto, and indeed the history of Japan, is divided into 20 eras, going back from the new era (the Meiji Restoration) to the ancient era (the Enryaku period).
The magnificent procession is approximately 2km long and involves approximately 2,000 people.
You can see the culmination of traditional craft techniques cultivated in Kyoto in each of the costumes and ritual implements used in the procession.
