What is Kyoto Gozan Okuribi?

The Gozan no Okuribi fires Kyoto light up the summer night sky on Aug. 16th.
It is one of the most representative seasonal events of summer in Kyoto. The "Daimonji" bonfire on Higashiyama Nyoigatake is the best known and is therefore said to be synonymous with send-off bonfires. Other bonfires include the "Myoho" bonfires on Matsugasaki Nishiyama (Mt. Mantoro) and Higashiyama (Mt. Daikokuten), the "Funagata" bonfires on Nishigamo Funayama, the "Hidarimaji" bonfires on Daikitayama (Mt. Daimonji), and the "Toriigata" bonfires on Saga Toriimoto Mandalayama. These are all lit in turn on the same night and are known as the Kyoto Five Mountains Send-off Fires.
