World Cultural Heritage

What is Koyasan?

A collective name for the mountains about 1,000 meters above sea level in Koyacho, Ito District, Wakayama Prefecture. It is the head temple of the Koyasan Shingon sect, which was established by Kobo Daishi Kukai as a training ground around 819 during the Heian period. Along with Mount Hiei, it is a sacred place in Japanese Buddhism. There are 117 temples on the mountain, including Kongobu-ji Temple, the head temple of the Koyasan Shingon sect.

It is the head temple of Koyasan sect of Buddhism and the head temple of Koyasan. It has a main hall with a large hall with beautiful sliding door paintings, and a annex overlooking the Banryutei, a magnificent rock garden.

Okunoin

Gobyo is the central holy place of Kobo Daishi faith, and is home to his tomb. The Ishidatami approach to the temple stretches for about 2km from Ichinohashi to Gobyo Bridge, and is surrounded by cedar Kidachi. It is a sacred place with over 200,000 gravestones and memorials.

Danjo Garan and Konpon Daito

This is an important sacred place of Koyasan, which was first opened by Kobo Daishi when Koyasan was founded. It is lined with shrines dedicated to Nyu and Koya Myojin, the Konpon Daito Pagoda, the Main Hall, and the National Treasure Fudo Hall.

"Tenku" sightseeing train with observation deck

The scenic train "Tenku" runs slowly through the townscape surrounded by deep mountains at an altitude of about 900 meters. Enjoy the abundant nature from the large windows.

Tentokuin Temple has the only garden on the mountain that has been designated a national scenic spot and certified as an important cultural property. The garden is surrounded by guest halls, so its greatest attraction is that you can view it from different angles from each room. Enjoy the peaceful Japanese space while quietly gazing at the garden.

Koyasan Onsen, Fukuchiin Temple

At Fukuchi-in, where you can enjoy hot springs at Koyasan, you can enjoy the 24-hour bathing in Koyasan Koya's hot springs. After viewing the three gardens designed by Mirei Shigemori, a famous landscape gardener of the Showa period, go to the Treasure Museum to view the relics of the Ii Tairo, the relics of various feudal lords associated with the Tokugawa family, and antique art from Nara period.
