Food, local specialties and souvenir information

The Izumo region has many souvenirs related to mythology, such as Izumo soba, zenzai, and magatama, which have been passed down since ancient times. Recently, souvenirs related to matchmaking have become very popular, and many "matchmaking sweets" are also on sale. Magatama are also becoming more and more easily carried, such as straps and bracelets.

Soba is a local dish that is widely eaten in the Izumo region of Shimane Prefecture. There are varieties such as Warigo soba and Kamaage soba, and it is considered one of Japan 3 (Wankosoba Iwate Prefecture Morioka, Nagano Prefecture, Togakushi soba from Nagano Prefecture, and Izumo soba from Shimane Prefecture). When making soba flour, the buckwheat seeds are ground in a stone mill with the skin on, so the soba has a deep, black color and a strong aroma.

It is well known that in the Izumo region, gods from all over the country gather in Oct. of the lunar calendar to hold a religious ceremony called the "Kamiarisai," and "Jinzai mochi" is served at the festival. It is said that "jinzai" became corrupted in the Izumo dialect (Zuzu dialect) to "zunzai" and then "zenzai," which was then introduced to Kyoto.

The Kojiki records that after Susanoo-no-Mikoto defeated Yamata-no-Orochi, he presented a "Magatama" to Amaterasu Omikami, which became the "Yasakani no Magatama" and its birthplace is said to be Izumo. Magatama represent the shape of the sun and moon overlapping, and symbolize the worship of the great universe. The hole is said to represent a connection to ancestors, and it has been used since ancient times as a stone to ward off evil and a ball to bring good luck.

Taisha Town is one of the leading producers of greenhouse grapes in Japan. In particular, the town boasts one of the largest volumes of Delaware grapes shipped in the country between April and Jun.. The fragrant, juicy grapes have a high sugar content and are of high quality, earning them a high reputation in the market. Taking advantage of these high-quality grapes, the town offers a wide variety of delicacies, including wine, Shimane Wagyu beef, and local sweets.

Shimane Wagyu beef is a breed that is raised in the quiet mountain areas of Oki Island and the Chugoku Mountains, where it is fed grass, barley, corn, and other grains for nearly two years, and is fertilized early to give it an excellent physique and shape. It is characterized by a rich flavor with a deep body and a unique sweet aroma.

Matsue City, which has ties to Matsudaira Fumai, a famous tea master and feudal lord, is known as a place of sweets, along with Kyoto and Kanazawa. Even today, the city, which still retains the atmosphere of a castle town, is home to many famous Japanese sweet shops, which carry many of Fumai's favorite sweets. "Wakakusa" in spring and "Yamakawa" in autumn are well known as Matsue's representative Japanese sweets, but the level of Matsue's confectioners is high, and each of the sweets has its own charm.

"Matsuba crab" refers to snow crabs caught in the San'in region. Matsuba crab fishing takes place in the Sea of Japan during the winter, when the waves are high, from early Nov. to Mar.. The crab meat, packed tightly into the large shell, is chewy and satisfying to eat.
