What is Izumo Taisha?

Izumo is known as the land of gods and myths. Even today, there are ancient shrines everywhere in the land of Izumo. The center of the shrines is Izumo Taisha, which enshrines Okuninushi-no-Okami, familiarly known as Okuni-sama. Famous as the god of marriage and good fortune, Izumo Taisha is an ancient shrine whose founding is recorded in the Kojiki, the oldest historical book in Japan, and was called Kitsuki Taisha until the early Meiji period. In the myth of the transfer of the country recorded in the Kojiki, Okuninushi-no-Okami transfers the country to Amaterasu-Omikami of Takamagahara, and the Amanohisumi-no-Miya shrine built at that time is said to be the beginning of Izumo Taisha.

"Kamiarizuki" is the month when gods from all over Japan gather in Izumo.

The eight million gods from all over Japan gather at Izumo Taisha to visit Okuninushi-no-Okami Oct. of the lunar calendar. In other regions, it is called "Kannazuki" (Month without Gods) because the gods are away, but in the Izumo region, it is called "Kamiari-zuki" (Month with Gods). At Izumo Taisha, where the gods gather, the festival begins with the "Kamimukaesai" (Welcoming the Gods Festival), followed by the "Kamiari-sai" (Festival to See the Gods Away), which sees the gods off to all parts of the country.

God's Welcome Ceremony

The Kamimukae Shinto Ceremony to welcome the gods is held every year at 7pm on the 10th day of the 10th Oct. the lunar calendar at Inasa Beach, 1km west of Izumo Taisha Shrine.

Kamiari Festival

It is said that for seven days from the 11th to the 17th of Oct. on the lunar calendar, gods from all over the country gather in Izumo to hold a Shinto ritual (kamigoto), in which the various aspects of life that people cannot know in advance are decided through a "divine decision."

Ceremony for the Departure of Gods

At 4pm on the 17th day of the 10th Oct. the lunar calendar, a ceremony is held to offer prayers of gratitude to the gods who have gathered from all over the country and to see them off as they depart from Izumo Taisha. Izumo Taisha also holds the Departure Ceremony for the Gods on the 26th day of the lunar calendar. This ceremony is a small ceremony to report to Okuninushi-no-Mikoto that the gods have left the land of Izumo, and is performed by a single priest in front of the main shrine.
