A long sandy peninsula in the sea

Nokke Peninsula is 26 kilometers long and is the largest sand spit in Japan. It is located in the east of Hokkaido, halfway between the Shiretoko Peninsula and Nemuro Peninsula. It was formed by the accumulation of sediment carried by seawater flowing along the shore, and the road is only 50 meters wide at its narrowest point! It feels like you are driving on the sea. The Nokke Peninsula is actually experiencing land subsidence, and it is said that the land will soon disappear. Todowara is a spot where the forests eroded by seawater have withered, leaving only the Japanese Sakhalin fir trees intact. Due to its rich natural environment, it has been registered as a Hokkaido Heritage Site and a Ramsar Convention Site.
