浦内川の支流である宇多良川付近で、1935年～1943年頃まで稼働していた炭坑の史跡です。
近代化産業遺産の一つに認定されており、亜熱帯の自然の中に存在する建造物跡です。
西表島の自然を巡りながら、歴史を感じることができるスポットになっています。
