Taushubetsu River Bridge (Kamishihoro Town, Hokkaido)
A spectacular view that can only be seen for a limited time
Concrete arch bridges, which were used on the former Japanese National Railways Shihoro Line, can be seen in places parallel to National Route 273, which runs north and south from the city center through the mountain forest area of Nukabira and Tokachi Mitsumata.
The viaduct, which resembles an aqueduct from ancient Rome, has ceased to function as a railway bridge and now stands as a modern industrial heritage site that conveys the history of the development of Higashidaisetsu.
Among them, the Taushubetsu River Bridge (commonly known as the Megane Bridge) that spans the Taushubetsu River begins to sink below the surface of the lake in Jun. when the water level of Lake Nukabira increases, and sinks to the bottom of the lake in Oct.. It is called the "phantom bridge" because it reappears on the frozen lake surface in Jan. when the water level recedes.
It was selected as a "Hokkaido Heritage" Oct. 2001.
