It is said that the festival began on Jul. 9, 1733 (May. 28, 18th year of the Kyoho era) in the lunar calendar, when fireworks were displayed at the river opening ceremony in Ryogoku. At first, Kagiya was in charge of launching fireworks, but in 1810, a branch of Kagiya, Tamaya, was established, and there were now two firework companies, each competing with the other. Kagiya and Tamaya took turns launching fireworks from different launch sites, so when both fireworks had been launched, spectators would call out the name of the company they thought was the best. This is said to be the origin of the familiar chants of "Tamaya!" and "Kagiya!" that are heard at fireworks displays.

This fireworks festival is said to be the most prestigious Kanto in terms of both tradition and prestige.
