The Kanmon Straits Strait Fireworks Festival, which lights up the summer night sky, was started by the Shimonoseki 21st Century Association in 1985 for people who return to their hometowns for the Obon festival. A total of 15,000 splendid fireworks are launched from both sides of the strait, captivating spectators against the backdrop of the beautiful night view of Kanmon Straits.

Since 1988, fireworks have also been launched from Moji Ward in Kitakyushu, and the event has become a joint venture between the two cities.
This spectacular fireworks festival, which features 15,000 fireworks and elaborate pyrotechnics on both sides of the river at Shimonoseki and Moji, has become one of the leading fireworks festivals in Japan.
