Highlights of the special open house inside the main building of the Akasaka Palace State Guest House

It is the only Western-style palace building in Japan in the neo-baroque style, designed by the court architect Tokuma Katayama, a disciple of the foreign architect Josiah Conder, who designed the Rokumeikan and other buildings. After Prince Yoshihito ascended to the throne, the Togu Palace was treated as a detached palace and renamed Akasaka Rikyu.

Hagoromo Room
The name comes from the large 300m2 painting on the ceiling, which depicts the scenery from the Noh play "Hagoromo" using the curved painting technique. The three chandeliers are the most luxurious in the guest house, assembled from approximately 7,000 parts, are approximately 3 meters tall and weigh approximately 800 kilograms, and the walls are decorated with plaster reliefs featuring musical instruments, sheet music, etc.

Flower and Bird Room
The name comes from the 36 oil paintings on the ceiling, the brocade tapestry hanging on the transom, and the 30 oval cloisonné pieces decorating the walls, all depicting flowers and birds. The surrounding lower-back walls are paneled with brown Shioji wood, and the cloisonné pieces decorate the middle section of the walls. The sketches were drawn by Japanese painter Watanabe Seitei, and the pieces were fired by Togawa Sosuke, a Meiji-era cloisonné genius.

The name comes from the golden reliefs of a sacred bird called "Ran" on both sides of the large mirrors on either side and on both sides of the fireplace made of gray marble. The white ceiling and walls are decorated with gold leaf plaster reliefs, and 10 mirrors make the room look spacious.
