Nita Pass, located east of Unzen Onsen town, is a famous spot for viewing autumn foliage, where the mountains are completely dyed in fiery, vibrant autumn colors.
Unzen is said to have over 120 species of plants that change color in autumn, and is designated as a national natural monument (Fugen-dake broadleaf forest). In late Oct., the deep green of the fir trees mixes with the red of the mountain pine and other plants, creating a vivid contrast of colors created by nature that is worthy of being called "Beautiful Autumn."

A 4-kilometer scroll of autumn leaves covering the valley

Kirishima Jingu Shrine the largest shrine in southern Kyushu, is famous as a power spot and was even visited by Ryoma Sakamoto on his honeymoon.
The shrine enshrines Ninigi-no-Mikoto and is also known as the "Nikko of the West," with even the interior of the main hall being lavishly decorated. The sacred cedar tree is a giant tree said to be over 800 years old.
