A recreation of the cormorant fishing on foot that was practiced during the Heian period
Cormorant fishing is a traditional fishing method that has been practiced throughout Japan since ancient times, in which a master fisherman controls a cormorant to catch fish. The style in which cormorant fishermen on Nagara River and other rivers ride in small boats is widely known, but Isawa cormorant fishing is characterized by the "kachiu" style, in which the cormorant fishermen directly enter the river. It was depicted in a Noh play long ago, and its history is said to date back to the Heian period. Depending on the conditions of the river, it is held for about a month from around Jul. 20th on the Fuefuki River, a former cormorant fishing river, and a cormorant fisherman experience is also planned for a limited number of people. It is one of the recommended traditional events.
