Hot Spring Specialties

Yunohama Onsen Morning Market and its specialty "Hama Nabe"
The Yunohama Onsen Morning Market is a traditional event that has been held in Yunohama Onsen from spring to autumn for a long time. It sells fresh local products, including fish and seafood landed at the local Kamo fishing port, as well as dried goods and fruit and vegetables. The market is always lively, filled with the laughter and spirited calls of the women of the beach. The specialty of this morning market is "hama nabe," a hot pot dish filled with plenty of local seafood, with a wide variety of toppings and seasonings. Don't forget to try it.

Hot Springs

Yunohama Onsen, the birthplace of surfing
On the beach along National Route 112, there is a monument to "the beach where surfing originated" and a monument of a young man wearing a red turd. Yunohama has long been known for its sea sport of "senoshi," which involves riding the waves on a single board. In 1821, a Sakata haiku poet wrote in his diary while at Yunohama Hot Springs that local children used to play on the senoshi. This is the root of modern-day bodyboarding. In 1965, the first surfing in the Sea of Japan began here. Now kite surfing is also popular.
