Hot Spring Specialties

Yamagata's famous thin-skinned manju
Nakajoya is a long-established Japanese sweets store founded in 1862, located in Shinyu Onsen town, the heart of Kaminoyama Onsen. As you walk down from the hot spring town, you can see the steam rising from the steaming buns, giving the hot spring town a sense of atmosphere. Their thin-skinned buns, Nakajo Manju, are a beloved specialty of Kaminoyama Onsen, and are known to everyone in Yamagata. The thin skin is kneaded with brown sugar and is filled with a smooth, strained bean paste, popular for its refined and exquisite sweetness. There are two types of bean paste: black bean paste and white bean paste.

Hot Springs

The history of the hot springs in the Kaminoyama Domain and the Domain era
Kaminoyama Onsen, along with Higashiyama and Yunohama Onsen, has long flourished as one of the three great pleasure towns of Ou and Uzen. During the feudal era, Kaminoyama Castle and the Kaminoyama Domain were located here, and the hot springs came under the management of the domain, with public baths and hot spring inns being built, and the area developed into a hot spring town. It prospered both as a castle town and as a post town on the Ushu Kaido road. Public baths such as Shimo-oyu, which was open to the common people during the Edo period, and Tsuru-no-yu, which was for lower-ranking samurai, still remain today.
