Hot Spring Specialties

Cider made with natural carbonated spring water
Hijiori Onsen is located inside the Hijiori Caldera, which was formed by volcanic activity 10,000 years ago, and various hot springs naturally gush out from it. One of these, the Caldera Onsenkan, a day-trip bathing facility, gushes out high-quality cold carbonated springs (carbon dioxide cold mineral springs), which are turned into a delicious cider called Hijiori Caldera Cider by adding 10% of the spring water. It has a reputation for being smoother and more flavorful than regular cider, and is perfect after a bath.

Hot Springs

"Sange Sange" is a traditional event at Hijiori Onsen
Gassan, a sacred mountain worshipped as a mountain where the souls of the dead gather. Hijiori Onsen is the trailhead for veneration of the mountain, and has a tradition of opening the hot springs as a place of purification before ascending the mountain. An event called "Sange Sange" that conveys this tradition is held every Jan.. It is a New Year's Eve event traditionally held in Dewa Sanzan, where villagers dressed in white robes and dressed as mountain ascetics wash away the impurities that arise from people's six senses, pray for good health and bountiful harvests, and parade through the hot spring town to the sound of a conch horn chanting "Sange Sange, Rokkon Zaisho." "Sange" comes from the word "repentance."
