Hot Spring Specialties

Akayu Onsen's specialty chili peppers, two varieties
Akayu Onsen has two specialty products made from chili peppers. One is Toraya Sato Raiemon's "stone-grilled chili mustard." It is made using large chili peppers called yami, and is made by kneading hemp seeds and other grass seeds with wheat flour, stuffing them into the chili peppers, and grilling them over charcoal. It is a specialty that has been around since the Edo period. Originally, it was made by sandwiching Nanban (a type of seafood) between hot stones and grilling them, and it began as a side job for housewives. The other is Onuma Togarashiten's "chili powder." It is a kind of three-flavor chili pepper made by adding green nori seaweed, sesame seeds, and Japanese pepper, and has been a traditional product since the early Meiji period.

Hot Springs

A hot spring with a long history as the palace bath of the Yonezawa domain
It is an ancient hot spring that was established over 900 years ago, and passed through the Date Domain before becoming Uesugi Domain. During the Yonezawa Domain era, it became the domain's hot spring resort, protected as a box bath for the lord, and flourished as an officially recognized entertainment spot for the domain. Of these, Uesugi no Onyu Gotenmori was appointed as a servant (guard) for the Uesugi family's Akayu Palace during the time of the second domain lord, Uesugi Sadakatsu, and became a villa for the Uesugi family, and continues to function as a hot spring inn to this day. Uesugi Yozan, the wise ruler who restored the Yonezawa Domain, was particularly fond of Akayu, and even had a painter paint the Eight Views of Akayu.
