Hot Spring Specialties

A dish of the rare luxury fish, grouper, that can be eaten all year round
Grouper is a fish of the grouper family that lives south of central Honshu, and can reach an adult length of 1m and 30-50kg. Those that live on the rocky shores of the Kii Channel, which is washed by the Kuroshio Current, are called "wild Kishu Hon-grouper" and are considered a rare and luxurious fish due to their low catch rate. Contrary to their grotesque appearance, they have elegant, deep, beautiful white flesh that is rich in fat, and the taste of their gelatinous skin and bones is said to surpass that of pufferfish. Shirahama Onsen is able to provide a stable supply of grouper, allowing you to enjoy a variety of grouper dishes all year round.

Hot Springs

Shirahama Onsen, one of Japan's three oldest hot springs, has a long history
Shirahama Onsen was known in ancient times as "Muro no Onsen." During the Asuka period, Emperor Saimei and others bathed in the hot springs, as did Man'yoshu poet Nukata no Okimi. It was also the scene of a tragic incident. After the Taika Reforms, Prince Nakano Oe arrested Prince Arima for plotting a rebellion against the emperor. Prince Arima, who was innocent, was escorted to Shirahama Onsen and executed by hanging. During the Heian period, ordinary aristocrats also began to visit the hot springs for therapeutic purposes. During the Edo period, Shirahama Onsen was loved by common people as it was located on the approach to Kumano, which was so crowded that it was called "the ant's pilgrimage to Kumano."
