Hot Spring Specialties

Sanma sushi, loved by the poet Haruo Sato
Katsuura fishing port, famous for tuna and bonito, is also a thriving saury fishing spot. Sato Haruo, a native of Shingu City, wrote about his hometown's saury in his masterpiece "Sanma no Uta" (Sanma Song). Sanma, which travel south from the Sanriku coast, lose just the right amount of fat by the time they reach Kumano, making them the perfect ingredient for saury sushi, a local dish that eastern Kishu is proud of. This pressed sushi is made by salting opened saury and then seasoning it with vinegar made from citrus fruits such as yuzu. As the whole fish is used, it is also called "saury sushi with whole fish" and is served with the head attached at some restaurants.

Hot Springs

Whaling in the past, whaling now
Taiji, the neighboring town of Nachikatsuura, is famous as the birthplace of traditional whaling, and was once a whale town that prospered through whaling. Now that whaling has been banned over time, it has become known as a whale watching town. Whales that migrate across the Pacific Ocean come to Kumano from spring to summer. You may be able to see a group of sperm whales, some of which can reach a length of 16 meters, or even see a jumping dolphin. You can travel by fishing boat to and from the area where the whales swim, and enjoy sea fishing on the way.
