Tourist Attraction Information

Kawayu Yakushi is located in the hot spring resort area. From Hatsushinmon Oji Kumano, it continues to the Hongu Taisha Kumano It is the base of an ancient road and the Otaki-san of the contract river on the way is a famous place of interest.

Highlights

Kumano The hot spring springs spring from the Oto River, a tributary of the river, and if one digs in the riverbed, one can find warm water. The "hermit bath" that is created by damming up the river is a wintertime tradition.

Hot Spring Specialties

Hot spring gourmet food unique to salty waters
Because the water at Kawayu Onsen contains salt, inns serve hot spring rice porridge and hot spring tofu. Hot spring rice porridge is a simple dish that best captures the taste of the hot spring. It is a light yellow-green rice porridge with a smooth and fragrant texture, making it the perfect breakfast. Hot spring tofu is heated with hot spring water instead of water, so the natural umami flavor of the soybeans is brought out by the hot spring. You can enjoy the deliciousness even more by first eating the piping hot tofu as is, and then with dashi soy sauce.

Hot Springs

A large, rustic open-air bath created by damming a river
Between Dec. and the end Feb., when the river flow is low, the huge open-air bath "Senninburo" is created by damming the Ooto River. The spring water, which is over 70 degrees Celsius, constantly bubbles up from the bottom of the river and mixes with the river water, creating a moderate hot spring. It gets crowded with many tourists during the day on holidays, but at night or early in the morning you can bathe under a starry sky while listening to the murmuring of the stream. In Jan., a karuta tournament is held, in honor of the hermit, with 1,000 wooden karuta cards floating in the bath. In summer, it's the perfect place to warm up after playing in the river.
