Hot Spring Specialties

"Owara Tamaten" is one of Toyama's famous sweets.
A representative sweet from Yao Town is "Owara Tamaten." It is made by whipping fresh eggs, adding sugar and agar to create a light snow jelly, then applying a yolk to the surface and baking it until golden brown. It has a light, soft, mild and mellow taste that is simply exquisite. It is served at several stores, but was invented in the mid-Meiji period by Hayashi Komajiro, the second generation owner of Hayashi Seido Honten.

The gorgeous and beautiful Owara Bon Festival
The Etchu Yao Owara Kaze no Bon Festival, a folk song event that controls the winds on the 210th day of the year and prays for a good harvest, has a history of over 300 years. Every year from Sep. 1st to 3rd, the entire town of Yao is decorated with thousands of paper lanterns, lanterns, and curtains, and dancers sing and dance to the Etchu Owara Bushi, played on shamisen and kokyu, as they parade through the town. There are three types of Owara dance: the Harvest Dance, the Men's Dance, and the Women's Dance, and the sad melodies played by the locals and the seductive dancing create an indescribable emotion.
