Hot Spring Specialties

Must-try specialty: horse chestnut mochi
"Tochimochi" is a popular souvenir item made by steaming and pounding rice together with horse chestnuts that grow wild in the local mountains. It is popular with locals and often sells out. The bite-sized mochi is coated with a thin layer of white powder, and the color of the mochi is the same as that of the horse chestnut. The filling is basically red bean paste. "Tochimochi" has a unique flavor and simple taste, and can be purchased at Matsunoya, located right next to Koitani Bridge over the Mitoku River, and other places.

Hot Springs

An ancient hot spring with the legend of the white wolf approaching a thousand years
Misasa Onsen is an ancient hot spring that has been around for nearly a thousand years, and it is said that if you visit it three times in the morning, your illness will be cured. According to legend, in 1163, when Okubo Samanosuke, a vassal of Minamoto no Yoritomo, went to Sanbutsu-ji Temple on Mount Mitoku to pray for the revival of the Genji clan, a white wolf saved his life and told him in a dream where the hot springs were gushing out. The hot springs remain as a public bath called Kabu-yu, and were used by locals during the Edo period. Since the Meiji period, many writers have visited the hot springs, including Yosano Tekkan and Akiko, Noguchi Ujo, Shiga Naoya, Saito Mokichi, and Shimazaki Toson.
