The legend of the Heike refugees and historical sites in Yunishigawa Onsen
Legend has it that Yunishigawa Onsen, deep in the mountains, began when Taira Tadazane and his vassals hid on Mount Keicho in Kawaji after losing the Battle of Dannoura, and then fled further from their pursuers to hide in Usunotaira, a hilltop in the area. It is said that the villagers lived in fear of the world, refraining from eye-catching carp streamers and bonfires, and not keeping chickens or dogs that make noise, even into later generations, and the village is dotted with spots related to the legend, such as the Heike Tomb and Takafusa Shrine. Immerse yourself in the romance of history as you soak in the soothing hot springs.
