Hot Spring Specialties
A new local delicacy with a wide variety of ingredients
"Toteyaki", a new local gourmet food of Shiobara Onsen, is a sweet made of a medium-thick sponge-like dough that is baked into a round shape, stuffed with ingredients and wrapped in paper, and can be eaten on the go like a crepe. "Toteyaki" is a trumpet-shaped horn that was used on horse-drawn carriages in the past. The dough is made using locally produced eggs and milk, and is finished in a way that is neither a crepe, dorayaki, nor a pancake. Another appealing feature is the variety of fillings available, including bean paste, fresh cream, chestnuts, soba, chili chicken, and Shiobara radish.
Hot Springs
One of the attractions of Shiobara Onsen: A Literary Walk
Since the opening of the Shiobara Highway in the Meiji era, many writers, including Natsume Soseki, Tanizaki Junichiro, and Saito Mokichi, have visited Shiobara Onsen and written their works there. Ozaki Koyo's "Konjiki Yasha," which was serialized from 1897, was also written here. The scenery of Shiobara is also depicted in "Zoku Konjiki Yasha" published in 1900. Tayama Katai described the eleven baths of Shiobara as a "hot spring resort" in his 1918 book "Onsen Meguri," which is said to be the first use of the term. As such, Shiobara is also famous as a literary town, and stone monuments with poems and haiku poems are scattered here and there.
