Since 1958, Tsuruya's Shio Yokan Honpo has been making the same delicious handmade salt yokan. Their salt yokan is a standard recommended souvenir from Yumoto Onsen. It is made using red beans from Tokachi Hokkaido, and is kneaded with only granulated sugar, salt, and agar. It is popular for its refined sweetness, refreshing taste, and smooth texture, and is available in both stick and bite-sized pieces. It sells out by mid-morning, so it's best to make a reservation by phone.

Hot Springs

A hot spring connected to a temple that anyone can use
Onsenji Temple, located close to the hot spring town, has hot spring water drawn into the temple's kitchen, and anyone can bathe there. It is available as a day-trip hot spring from late Apr. to late Nov.. This temple is a branch temple of the World Heritage site Nikko Temple, and its history dates back to when Shodo Shonin, the founder of Nikko, discovered this hot spring in 788 and enshrined a Yakushi Nyorai statue to relieve illness. It is said to be the roots of the hot spring, with miraculous powers. After the bath, you can relax in the tatami-floored lounge, where tea and snacks are served.
