Hot Spring Specialties

The king of the sea, the spiny lobster and the giant S-class turban shell
Minamiizu boasts the highest catch of spiny lobsters in the prefecture. Sashimi and "Onigarayaki", which is lobster cut open and grilled with the shells still on, are especially popular. The "Ise Lobster Festival" is held around Sep. 15th, when the ban on lobster fishing is lifted. Another local specialty, the Shimoda S-class turban shell, is an extra-large turban shell weighing over 400g, caught by hand by fishermen using diving techniques in the waters around Mikomoto Island off the coast of Shimoda. With a fragrant sea scent and a rich sweet taste, it is especially popular when cooked in a pot, as sashimi, or when served over rice.

Hot Springs

A facility introducing the geosites of Izu
Izu has been certified as Japan Geopark. The Minamiizu Geopark Visitor Center is a facility that introduces Izu topography created by volcanic activity. Located at Okuishiro, a scenic spot where the active Irozaki Fault line stretches, you can see scenery unique to Izu, such as lava caves and columnar joints cracked like a turtle shell. It is also a scenic spot for watching the sunset, and has a Sunset Cafe on the premises. The Geoconfectionery sweets, which are sweets that capture the scenery of Izu, would make a great souvenir.
