Hot Springs

Shuzenji Temple Hot Springs, Tokko-no-Yu and Kobo-Daishi
In 807, Kukai (Kobo-Daishi) saw a boy washing his sick father's body in a Shuzenji Temple river. Impressed by the boy's filial piety, he thought that the river water must have been too cold, so he broke a rock in the river with his tokko and caused a sacred spring to gush out. Rumors spread that his father's long-standing illness was quickly cured by this hot spring, and the Shuzenji Temple hot spring was born. Kukai's Tokko-no-yu, which gave its name to the hot spring resort's symbolic "Tokko-no-yu," was actually excavated from the hill behind the nearby Shuzenji temple in 1961 and is on display in the Shuzenji temple's treasure hall.
