Hot Spring Specialties

The most popular food in Shimoda is red sea bream
Shimoda Port has a large catch of golden-eyed snapper. As a white-fleshed deep-sea fish, it is fatty all year round, and although its peak season is generally in winter, it is said to be at its fattiest around Jun., just before spawning. It is suitable for a wide variety of dishes, including the classic boiled version, as well as salt-grilled, shabu-shabu, sashimi, dried fish, and shumai. There is also a wealth of B-grade gourmet food available, with particularly popular dishes being "kinme croquette," "Shimoda burger," and "kinme oyaki."

Hot Springs

A town with a history of Perry's arrival and the first port of call
In 1854, the US Navy, led by Commodore Perry, arrived at Shimoda Port, which was then known as Kazemachi Port, to sign the Treaty of Peace and Amity between the United States and Japan. This marked the end of the isolationist policy and the beginning of modern Japan. Thus, Shimoda became Japan's first open port, and many historical sites and untold stories remain. At Rendaiji Onsen, where Yoshida Shoin went to cure his skin disease, there are also the Murayama Residence, where he took refuge when he attempted to stow away on the Black Ships, and the Oyoshigafuchi, where Oyoshi, who was made the mistress of Harris, the first Consul General of Japan, drowned herself, making it a fun historical stroll.
