Hot Spring Specialties

Two popular local delicacies from Dogashima Onsen
"Kaizoku-yaki" is a seafood-style salt-fried noodle dish with squid ink noodles. It was named after the pitch black noodles, which Image the image of the fierce pirate conquest scene of the local "Dogashima Fire Festival." The contrast between the black noodles, the green seaweed, and the red pickled ginger is eye-catching. "Shiokatsu Udon" is a udon noodle dish topped with grilled salted bonito, a traditional preserved food of Nishiizu, sesame seeds, seaweed, wakame, bonito flakes, chopped green onions, and a soft-boiled egg, and then drizzled with dashi soy sauce and mixed together. Both are also sold as souvenirs.

Hot Springs

Tombolo phenomenon on Sanshiro Island
Sanshiro Island is made up of four islands, Elephant Island, Nakano Island, Okinose Island, and Takashima Island, located about 200m offshore from Dogashima Island. The tombolo phenomenon occurs when the islands are connected to the mainland due to the difference in the tides. At low tide, a beach about 30m wide is created, allowing people to get to the islands without getting wet. This is rare on a rocky coast, and it is even rarer for a beach to rise and fall with the tides. It has been designated a natural monument by the prefecture, and is perfect for playing on the rocks. Sanshiro Island is the site of a tragic love story between Sanshiro, a young warrior of the Genji clan, and Koyuki, the daughter of a powerful Nishina clan.
