The Ajiro district of Atami city was a natural harbor so good that it was praised as "Edo Ajiro in Kyoto and Osaka" during the Edo period. Squid mince is a home-cooked dish that has been handed down in Ajiro since ancient times. It is made by adding minced squid and vegetables to the paste of locally caught horse mackerel, mackerel, squid, flying fish, etc., and forming it into meatballs, which are then cooked. It can be cooked in a variety of ways, including deep-frying, grilling, and searing. It can be enjoyed at restaurants in Atami city, and is served as a set meal or a la carte dish, and is also sold frozen as a souvenir.

Hot Springs

The Tokugawa Shogun and the Road to Hot Water
In 1597, Tokugawa Ieyasu stayed at Atami, but later shoguns had hot water brought to Edo Castle. Atami Atami In 1667, during the reign of Ietsuna, several stalwart men carried a brand-new hinoki cypress cask filled with hot water from Atami and carried it for 15 hours to Edo Castle under the banner "Gohonmaru goyo" ("Imperial visit to Edo Castle"). The scene was sung in a song, "Atami yoritoko hinomaru ote omoto honmaru e yu ga yuku" (Good place, set the rising sun flag, hot water goes to the castle). The procession is reenacted at the annual festival of Yumae Shrine.
