Hot Spring Specialties

Izumo Passing on the tradition of making katadama
The name of the place reflects the shape of the magatama, which represents the overlapping of the sun and the moon, symbolizing the worship of the Great Universe. The hole in the magatama signifies a connection with ancestors. In ancient Izumo, agate produced in the flower of Senyama was used to make magatama by Tamatsukuri craftsmen in the area around present-day Matsue-shi Tamayucho. These magatama were presented to the Izumo country and the imperial court and eventually spread throughout the country. Today, modern magatama, crafted using traditional techniques at the 'Izumomagatama Village Heritage Museum,' have become popular as accessories for matchmaking.

Hot Springs

One of Japan oldest hot springs, where even the gods gather
Tamatsukuri, named after the ancient village of magatama craftsmen, is said to have been discovered by Sukunahikona, who, along with Oguni, built the country in the Age of Kojiro. The Izumo Fudoki states that 'one wash will refresh your appearance and make you feel better, and bathing again will cure all kinds of illnesses.' For this reason, it was also called 'the hot spring of the gods,' and the hot springs by the Kawabe were said to be as lively as a city. It also appears in The Pillow Book, and during the Edo period, the Matsue Domain built a villa called 'Chaya' there, where successive domain lords came to recuperate.
