Hot Spring Specialties

Grilled mackerel somen noodles, a home-cooked and entertaining dish
The route along the shores of Lake Biwa from Obama in Fukui-Prefecture to Miyako has a long history of being associated with mackerel, so much so that it is known as the "Mackerel Highway." Yakisaba somen, a specialty of the Kohoku region, originates from a local custom called "May greetings." This custom is when parents of daughters who have married into farming families would send grilled mackerel to their wives in May, the busy farming season for rice planting. Yakisaba somen, made by cooking grilled mackerel and somen noodles together, is a simple home-cooked dish, but it has also been served to guests at Nagahama Hikiyama Festival as a hospitality dish.

Hot Springs

Hot springs and float festivals associated with Toyotomi Hideyoshi
Nagahama Taiko Onsen is popular as a hot spring with ties to Toyotomi Hideyoshi. It is said that Hideyoshi moved to his first castle, Nagahama Castle, and had his first son here, which is why the hot spring came to be known as "Kodakara no Yu" (Bath of Children). Hideyoshi was delighted with the birth and to celebrate, he showered gold dust on the townspeople, who then used it to make floats, and the Nagahama Hikiyama Festival is said to have begun. The gorgeous floats, made by successive master craftsmen, are also known as "moving art museums" and are designated as Important Intangible Cultural Properties of Japan. The biggest attraction is the "Children's Kabuki" performance.
