Hot Spring Specialties

The famous open-air sand Sunayu is ranked as the top in the west
The massive communal open-air bath "Sand Sunayu," located beneath Yunohara Dam, is a renowned spot representing Yubara Onsen. It is an open-air bath with a spring source emerging from the riverbed, and it received its name from the sand and hot spring water that spout from the riverbed. This Sunayu is the only remaining example of the ancient baths of Yubara Onsen and has been designated as a cultural property of the city. In 1977, Fuyuto Noguchi, the president of the Association of Travel Writers, ranked it as the top open-air bath in western Japan in the "Onsen" newspaper published by the Japan Onsen Association.

Hot Springs

The History of Tatara Ironworks and Yubaraonsen
The symbol of Yubara Onsen is the massive open-air bath called Sunayu, which overlooks the dam embankment. With its abundant supply of hot water, this natural open-air bath attracts many visitors, allowing them to soak in the water while enjoying the changing seasons. The area has a long history, as it has been a hub for "Tatara ironworks" since the Kofun period. There are many historical sites and Kanayama (small hills formed from the accumulation of scraps from ironworking). Because Tatara ironworking was labor-intensive and required a large workforce, workers would visit Yubara Onsen to relax and soothe their tired bodies.
