It is delicious to eat all year round, and it is said that there are only three days in a year when it is not tasty, but octopus caught from autumn to winter is called "San-dako" (cold octopus), and as this is the time of year when the flesh is firmest and the flavor is most concentrated, Nov. is the peak season for octopus fishing off the coast of Shimotsui. Octopus can be eaten in a variety of ways, including sashimi, deep-fried, and octopus rice, and "dried octopus," made by spreading the legs of Shimotsui octopus and exposing it to the cold wind, is a seasonal winter feature of the Shimotsui region.

Shimotsui Port, facing the Seto Inland Sea, is a fishing port where an abundance of fresh fish is landed. In the mid-Edo period, ships on the inland sea routes and Kitamae ships constantly came and went. Furthermore, as a crossing point to Shikoku, many people visited the port on their way to Konpira. Even today, the town's merchant houses and herring storehouses from that time have been carefully preserved, conveying the atmosphere of a fishing town. Furthermore, Mount Washu, towering over the sea, is a scenic spot from which you can get a panoramic view of the Seto Inland Sea and the Great Seto Bridge. On clear days, you can even see Shikoku, and it is also known as a great spot for viewing the night view.
