Hot Spring Specialties

Tochimochi and Sesamemochi, specialties of the rice-producing region of Echigo
The souvenir shops at Myoko Tsubame Onsen sell simple tochimochi and sesame mochi. Tochimochi is made by steaming rice together with chestnuts that have been painstakingly cleaned of their bitterness. Its unique bitter taste goes well with the bean paste. Sesame mochi is a rice cake with so much black sesame seeds kneaded into it that the dough looks gray. It is also filled with bean paste. It is fun to eat it while walking around the hot spring town.

Hot Springs

Free open-air baths, Golden Bath and Riverside Bath
Tsubame Onsen, which serves as the base for climbing Mt. Myoko, has two free open-air baths. These are "Kogane no Yu" near the hiking trail, and "Kawara no Yu" in a deep valley. Kogane no Yu is an open-air bath located about a five-minute walk from the hot spring town, with the men's and women's baths separated by rocks. "Kawara no Yu" is located in a stream next to the footbridge on the footpath that leads to Soutaki Falls. This mixed-gender open-air bath is located right next to the stream at the bottom of the valley, and the bath is elegantly constructed from rocks and stones. If you come to Tsubame Onsen, you should definitely try out these two open-air baths before heading out.
