Hot Spring Specialties

Always ranked high in souvenir rankings
A specialty of Muikamachi is Koto's Oroku Manju. Made with premium brown sugar from Tarama, Okinawa, the chewy dough is filled with "peeled bean paste" made from red beans with the skin removed. It is smoother than regular koshian and goes down easier. Secret ingredients include honey and roasted salt, giving the manju a unique taste and texture. The "Oroku" in the product name comes from Higuchi Yoroku, the childhood name of Naoe Kanetsugu, the pride of Muikamachi.

Muikamachi, where Uesugi Kagekatsu and Naoe Kanetsugu lived
It was in this mountain castle on Mount Sakado that Naoe Kanetsugu, the protagonist of the historical drama "Tenchijin," spent his childhood with his lord, Uesugi Kagekatsu. Today, what remains are the remains of the main castle's upper residence at the top of the mountain, the middle residence on the mountainside, the castle lord's residence at the foot of the mountain, and the remains of the vassal residences. Within Zenibuchi Park stands the Naoe Kanetsugu Kodenseikan historical museum, Image after Kanetsugu's birthplace. The building is a relocated old house, and features many interesting exhibits, including a military fan and unusual helmet that Kanetsugu is said to have used, as well as a diorama of Sakado Castle. You can get a real feel for the Muikamachi where the two men lived.
