Hot Spring Specialties

Matsunoyama Onsen's specialty "Shinkomochi" is made from local rice
Matsunoyama Onsen's specialty Shinko Mochi was first made by Kojimaya Confectionery. The oval-shaped mochi is made with Uonuma Koshihikari rice and is stuffed with smooth, flavorful bean paste. Originally made carefully from the raw ingredients by an old lady known as "Grandma Shinko," the shop owner inherited the recipe and continued to research it. Shinko Mochi is also available wrapped in real bamboo leaves, which have a nostalgic, refreshing bamboo scent.

Hot Springs

Rice terraces that make the most of the mountainside slopes
The rice terraces of Tokamachi City, where beautiful nature and scenery have been preserved and wildlife have been passed down among the nature-rich countryside and rice fields, have been selected as one of the "100 Best Rice Terraces of Japan" (certified by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries). Near the Matsunoyama intersection, there are rice terraces known as "Senmaida," where rice fields are lined up in line with the undulating terrain at an altitude of about 300m to 500m. The rice terraces are gently bordered by high ridges, and hot water channels have been built to heat meltwater, with rows of cedar trees for irrigation. The view of carefully tended rice fields lined up in a stepped pattern is a true Japanese original.
